Tamuz, Benjamin. "Shtey hazyot"
Title trans.: "Two Visions"
What if: Israel was created in 1848 or Zionists had heeded warnings in 1899 that creation of a Jewish state would lead to Arab violence.
Summary: In the first scenario, Arab inhabitants of Palestine are massacred and the Jewish state becomes riven by something like apartheid. It is destroyed in 1918 by a colaition of Arab forces. In the second scenario, Palestine instead becomes the cultural heart of world Judaism and home of a Judaic research center, but not the location of a state. But after World War II, the research center moves to the U.S. and the Zionist dream ends.
